As we all know, one of the hardest things for anyone in business to get under control is finding the time to do what they have to do to stay effective and to get some kind of order and pattern to their week. I’ve been working with the hugely successful Andy Rossi from Castle Realty in Newcastle and he has found the most significant game changer in his business is taking what he calls ‘road days’.
Andy explains, “I look after sales for myself and the rest of the team, so I had to find an opportunity to get out of the office, purely to free up myself to get my work done.” He found it hard chopping and changing between his different responsibilities but getting out of the office proved to be a winning strategy. Andy has found that taking to the road for a day has led to an increase in sales, an increase in listings, he’s more efficient and his joy for the job has returned.
He had to get out of the office so he could get what he had to do done which in turn enabled him to be there for his staff. Road days allow him to marry his two roles. Interestingly, Andy has found that with him not being there, his staff have started solving their own problems and taking action independently. He says, “if you’re not there, people figure it out without you!”
So one day a week, Andy spends a whole day on the road. Andy says, “I start out on the road, I stay on the road, I may pop back late, but my whole day is structured about not returning.” His road day is planned within an inch of its life. He explains, “The night before I do these road days, I sit down and nut out what I want to do. Planning the day in minute details means that I know who I will have to call, who I have to make appointments with and whether or not I can drop in on them – which has proven to be quite a successful sales tactic. Clients can be really pleased that you have taken the time to come and see them.” When he first started with this idea, Andy made two days a week road days. “Initially we started with two days a week – Tuesdays and Thursdays and we found out for the first fortnight to a month it worked really well.” explains Andy. However, now that he has created the space for himself to get on top of his work, and churn through his hottest leads, one day a week is now devoted to a road day. And everyone is reaping the benefits.
