June Newman, The Psychology of success

June Newman has been around the block. In her long working life, she has owned many successful small businesses and been an award winning salesperson. Now in her older years, she has retrained as a counsellor and shares her wisdom with up and coming sales people.

“I have learned that success is all about psychology. We may want to be successful but the biggest barrier to success is often ourselves! We are complex creatures and sometimes we need someone to listen and help us separate the sabotage from reality,” Ms Newman said.

It is possible to turn negative thinking around and it doesn’t require a lifetime to achieve. Everything we need to do to change is inside ourselves. There are many ways the mind works to stop ourselves from being successful. If you can tune into those, you can remove the barriers to achieving your dreams.

Ms Newman has a list of psychological attributes that are critical to success.

Conquer destructive thinking

Our minds can be our own worst enemies. In her experience working with clients, Ms Newman has found that, “Destructive thinking can crush dreams and desires of success. How many times have you thought ‘I’m not good enough, I’m not bright enough, I’m not good looking enough, I’m not worthy enough’?” The problem with thoughts like these is that they become our actions and we don’t even know it. We become what we think. If we think destructively we will be more likely to give up when the inevitable obstacles arise.

Ms Newman added, “Thinking optimistically requires awareness of our thoughts and to be on guard and take charge of our minds. I help clients to tune into the self-talk and direct the mind to perform in a more effective manner. I help clients to become conscious, to take charge and responsibility for what they think.”

Champion yourself

Success comes down to how we see ourselves. We must make sure that the person we listen to the most is the person we see back in the mirror every day – ourselves. Ms Newman said, “Self image has to be built and fuelled from within to be sustainable rather than dependent on others’ views and opinions.” She explained further, “I help clients build a healthy self worth and remind them that it is always possible to rewrite a script to boost a new self image. I also help them surround themselves with people who are cheerleaders and wise mentors who act as supports when climbing the slippery slopes of victory.”

Be kind to yourself

It is so important to be kind to ourselves and our bodies. Sleep keeps us alert and fresh. “It powers us through the day’s challenges,” Ms Newman said. To achieve success, she believes it is imperative that the body and mind are nourished and nurtured. Maintaining a balanced diet and keeping our environment clear and uncluttered is essential in maintaining a state of restfulness and maximising potential. she sees exercise as essential. “Exercising for as little as ten minutes a day will make our heart and lungs glow and daily sunlight gives the body vitamin D. A little time spent each day in the fresh air and sun helps the body rebalance.”

Realise the value of persistence

Research shows that one of the main reasons why we might find it difficult to achieve our goals is because at the first sign of difficulty, we give up. Persistence is the key to success. One stumble does not mean that the whole idea is flawed; it does not mean that the goal is impossible to achieve. Ms Newman believes that people who are successful, persist. She said, “Successful people know they are going to fail numerous times before they reach their goal; they have the capacity to build on failure and work at creating solutions to obstacles as they arise. They don’t fear failure - they embrace it as a natural occurrence on the road to success.” Thinking like an athlete is critical to enduring success. June Newman is of the view that, “An athlete knows in the very fibre of their being they’ll win some and they’ll lose some but it will not affect who they are. They believe in themselves. They know that they’ll have to work for six months to achieve their goal. They know that they’ll have to get up at 5 o’clock every morning and they know that they may have to pound the pavement for hours. But it doesn’t matter because it’s all part of their vision. They don’t collapse at the first obstacle. They get up and keep going.”
