Its been reported that web browsing on smart phones and tablets is expected to overtake desktops and laptops for the first time this year. In the real estate space, this is a significant trend as property seekers are using their mobile devices to research more about particular properties, expecting to see an optimised property page with all property information.
Property Alerts – increasingly property seekers check their emails via their phone. When they receive property alerts they will click through to the property on their mobile device.
At the sign – out the front of a property a property seeker will type the property url into their phone in order to obtain additional information.
QR Codes – these are often placed on signboards and in marketing material such as brochures, newspapers and magazines. When a property seeker snaps an image of the QR Code they will be directed to the property page.
So how do you make sure your website is optimised for tablets and smart phones? Tablets are quite easy to optimise for, as around 90% of most websites will render correctly with a few tweaks required to get them 100% right.
Mobile devices are a little harder and require adjusting the website layout to suit the screen resolution for a mobile device. Traditionally, this has been achieved through creating a separate website which traffic is directed to if they are using a mobile device. The advantage is this is quite cost effective as there are many templates out there that can achieve this eg www.hodges.com.au will direct you to m.hodges.com.au. A disadvantage is that not all site content appears in the mobile site.
Responsive Design – this means the entire site will adjust according to the type of device you’re using. The user is not directed to another website meaning they can view all website content. But a disadvantage is that to build a responsive website increases the cost of development by around 30% due to the additional time involved.
